Petrobowl

The Petrobowl is a knowledge contest with quick questions about the oil industry. Universities from different parts of the world attend this contest that the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) holds annually. The first edition of the contest was held in 2002. In 2015 it became a global competition with the introduction of six regional qualifying rounds. Through these qualifiers, each region selects the teams that will participate in the international championship. The competition is held as one more activity of the Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE), the most important event of the SPE.

The UNAM participated for the first time in 2010. Two years later it won second place in the competition (San Antonio, 2012). As a result of the continuous preparation of various generations, the UNAM has managed to obtain first place on three occasions: Houston 2015, San Antonio 2017 and Dallas 2018. Additionally, two university players have been awarded as the most valuable player in the competition (José Parra 2012 and Cesar Mesa 2015). Year after year, the goal is to increase the level of the teams, to raise the name of Mexico, the UNAM and of course of the participants.

The university has had the support of several sponsors among which are Schlumberger, Jaguar, SEFI, Chapopote Foundation and SPE Mexico Section. The preparation of the team is continuous and those interested in participating can join the team at any time of the year. Or, in some of the recruiting that takes place after the competitions.

Belonging to the team is a demanding but very enriching activity.
