Intersemester Courses: Semester 2020-1
January 27, 2020

During the 2020-1 intersemester, the Earth Science Engineering Division (DICT) and the Petroleum Engineering Department taught the courses "Introduction to Python applied to Petroleum Engineering" and "Introduction to the Analysis of Non-Conventional Oil and Gas Fields"

During the intersemester 2020-1, the courses "Introduction to Python applied to Petroleum Engineering" and "Introduction to the Analysis of Non-Conventional Oil and Gas Fields" were given as part of the Teaching Updating and Improvement Program (PASD) for Professors.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering belonging to the Division of Engineering in Earth Sciences (DICT) of the Faculty of Engineering (FI) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) decided to offer the above mentioned courses due to the current great boom of both subjects. This is the first time that any of these courses are taught at the DICT.

Dr. Victor Leonardo Teja Juarez was the instructor of the course "Introduction to Python applied to Petroleum Engineering", which took place from January 13 to 17, 2020 with a duration of 20 hours. The main objective of this course was to provide the basic tools for the handling of the Python programming language. Basic concepts of Differential Calculus were reviewed as well as the development of single-phase and two-phase numerical simulators applied to the oil industry. This course was attended by full time professors as well as subject professors from the Department of Petroleum Engineering, and researchers from the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM.

On the other hand, Dr. Bruno Armando López Jiménez gave the course "Introduction to the Analysis of Non-Conventional Gas and Oil Deposits", which took place from January 20 to 24, 2020 with a duration of 20 hours. The main objective of this course was to present the basic concepts related to the analysis of non-conventional deposits such as: tight oil and gas formations, oil and gas shale deposits, methane hydrates, and coal bed deposits. The topics covered in this course were petrophysics, geomechanics, production data analysis (PDA), and simulation of unconventional reservoirs. This course was attended by full time professors as well as subject professors from the Petroleum Engineering Department, and full time professors from the Geological Engineering Department.

The first edition of these courses was very satisfactory due to the interest in them. It is expected that these courses will continue to be offered in the future, with the aim of promoting the continuing education of both academics and professionals in the hydrocarbon industry.
