The UNAM team wins the 3rd place in the 2021 International Petrobowl Championship

During the International Petrobowl Championship competition that took place the 4th and 5th of September 2021, the UNAM Petrobowl team accomplished the third place. When they got to the match for the third place against the Houston University, they obtained a historic result in the Petrobowl competition. After two rounds and tying with a scoreboard of 65 UNAM – 65 UH, they proceed to decide the winner with an additional round in which they obtained a final score of 85 UNAM – 85 UH. Since both teams couldn’t break the tie, the judges and the players decided to share the prize.

During the competition the UNAM team faced against five different teams to obtain an opportunity to contend for the bronze medal. On the first round they had to face against Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) obtaining a score of 45 UNAM – 25 OAU with which they gained their pass to the next round. For the second round of the competition, they were put against the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) with a final score of 75 UNAM – 40 ITB they won their pass to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals it was the turn to compete against the Federal University of Technology Owerry (FUTO) from Nigeria, in this match the final score was 10 UNAM – 0 FUTO obtaining the pass to the semifinals. At the semifinals they met with an old rival, the Oklahoma University (OU), the UNAM team has faced against this university on several occasions having always a hard-fought and fierce match. In this occasion there were 2 rounds in which they obtained a score of 70 UNAM – 60 OU for the first round and a score of 45 UNAM – 100 OU on the second round, securing a final score of 115 UNAM – 160 OU. With this result the next match would be against the Houston University in which they obtained a score of 65 UNAM – 65 UH and 85 UNAM – 85 UH to share the third position in the competition.

The UNAM team year by year produces players with a great level, capable of qualifying to the international competition and competing against any team. The UNAM Petrobowl teams has between their accomplishments 3 Petrobowl championships and 2 MVP awards. This is due to the high performance of the students and the professors who are focused on the acquisition of knowledge and in preparing for the international competition. We must highlight the strenuous and constant effort of Dr. Fernando Samaniego Verduzco, whom as faculty advisor of the team oversees guiding the UNAM students team every year and preparing them for the competition. This is a high exigency preparation since the learning curve is really steep for the students that are part of the UNAM’s work group which renews players every year.
